Five serves every beginner should master first

CMCorentin Mazaud · May 12, 2026 · 6 min read

Most beginners obsess over power and completely ignore spin — and spin is the entire point of a serve. Before you can compete, you need a small set of serves you can produce on demand, place accurately, and disguise well enough that your opponent has to guess.

Start with the pendulum serve: it’s the most versatile motion in the game and teaches you the wrist snap every other serve borrows from. Once that’s reliable, add a backspin variation from the same motion — same look, opposite spin, and suddenly your opponent can’t read you off the toss.

From there, layer in a short serve that dies just past the net, a long, fast serve to catch a deep-standing opponent off guard, and a simple side-spin serve to pull returns wide. Five serves is plenty at this stage — depth beats variety every time.

The real skill isn’t any single serve, it’s switching between them without changing your motion. Practice all five from the same stance and toss height until your opponent can’t tell which one is coming until it’s too late.
